Compositions for download

I've divided the music into sections, made with or without ImproSculpt.
In the Various section, there's also some pieces made with the predecessor of ImproSculpt: Follow Me.

ImproSculpt

All these pieces are live improvisations. Recorded live in studio or in concert.
Most of it is pretty free form, some tracks are edited as "cuts" of the more interesting parts of the session. Others are complete takes.
Most of it is "first sessions" by that musician with ImproSulpt.
Everything is done with the Improsculpt software build in Csound.
ImproSculpt is played by Oeyvind Brandtsegg on all pieces.

Ken Butler on Hybrid Stringed instruments. Recorded in Ken's A.I.R. studio in Brooklyn, NY April 2002. I was amazed at Ken's instrument collection, both by it's visual and sonic characteristics. Ken's playing opened up a new "micro-universe" of sound exploration.

Russ Johnson plays Trumpet. Recorded in Karthik's "Screen Team Studio", Manhattan April 2002. The piece starts out pretty straight ala "jazz trumpet with delay machine" but sublty evolves into more ImproSculpt-ish-ness.

Commisioned by Midt-Norsk Solistensemble, this is the composition that led to the development of the ImproSculpt software. Lyrics by Marte Huke.
The technical quality of the live audio recording is not satisfactory, this is entirely my fault. I include this piece here for documentation and demo purposes, and thus it is free of charge.
When a better quality recordingis available,
it will be substituted.

The Bear of the Red Mountain

preview (241 kB)

zip (5.6 MB)

An electronic composition made from observation data of a brown bear (2001). Commissioned by the International Brown Bear Researcher's Conference in Steinkjer 2002, the piece was part of a performance by Bengt Carling, Njål Ølnes and Marcus Edvardsen.
Written almost exclusively in Csound, the piece maps the movements of a brown bear over a time span of four years into melodic and sonic textures.

Live recording from 1999 of the band "Decypher".

EA etude 0

preview (520 kB)

zip (4.9 MB)

Production "etude" from 1994. At the time I started looking for a way to combine "contemporary" music with jazz and electronic grooves. Eirik Hegdal played soprano sax, Oeyvind Brandtsegg on vibes.

EA etude 1

Production "etude" from 1996. An electronic piece made exclusively with sounds of sampled glass objects.

EA etude 2

preview (455 kB)

zip (3.6 MB)

Production "etude" from 1997. Different melodic and rhythmic layers of different length and meter superimposed. I guess it was a bit inspired by the music of John Cage.

Follow Me 97

preview (434 kB)

zip (6.2 MB)

Acoustic computer controlled piece (1997). Made with the aid of my first impro-processing software (called FollowMe). This piece is a vibraphone/piano duo, where a computer interprets the vibraphone improvisation, playing back the processed data onto a DiskClavier computer controlled Grand Piano. Vibes played by Oeyvind Brandtsegg.

Follow Me 99

preview (614 kB)

zip (14.3 MB)

An electronic piece for vibraphone and computer(1999). This piece is also made by the help of the FollowMe software, but using only electronic playback sound this time and adding some programmed drum grooves. The main structure is precomposed, the "contents" of each part is improvised. The piece was performed under the dafx99 conference in Trondheim.

Sjakktrekk

mp3 (3.6 MB)

A serial composition for jazz trio. Based on a 12 tone row both for the theme and for the improvisations. Performed by BEN-L trio (Oeyvind Brandtsegg:Vibes, Mats Eilertsen:Bass, Paal Nilssen-Love:Drums)

Silent Air, Main

see Silent Air Intro above. The main part is a lot more silent and contemplative, than the intro. More fragmented and ethereal. This might be bad planning of the tension curve ...
